Thursday, March 03, 2011 | 5:39 AM | 0 comments This is / used to be my callingWhat I'm about to show is very dear to me, something that has been very, very significant to me And because I had so much time on hand these days, I gave so much thought about this. I don't regret anything. Not one decision. Ok, fine. Maybe one, or two.. but that's all. Those were.. separate matters. "Thanks for your wonderful message. It's very sweet of you, and it really touched me that you remembered me in the midst of your exams. Well, in answer to your questions.. I've been playing the piano and singing in a choir since primary school, and started out as a section leader. Then I went to VJ and became the co-student conductor and SL. Didn't really go through any formal conducting training then.. just watched and learned from my conductor, and slowly developed my own conducting style. It helps to play the piano too, I suppose. In VJ (and in most JC's in fact) we do christmas caroling gigs in hotels and shopping malls every christmas and the student conductors will have to conduct these performances. So it was then that I first conducted the choir proper. After graduating from JC, I helped some conductors to prepare some of their choirs for SYF, and that was my first exposure to teaching choirs, and that was also when the seed was first planted where I seriously considered going into conducting. However, after going into university, I stopped conducting for awhile due to schoolwork, though I still continued singing with VJC's alumni choir (Victoria Chorale). Upon graduating uni, I actually worked for a year in a corporate position before deciding that I couldn't ignore my original dream to do music. And what better time to pursue a dream when you're still young right? So with the blessing of my parents, I quit my job and went into conducting. It was really through the help and support of some other conductor friends that I managed to break into the industry. As for training.. well, a lot of it is on-the-job training, as well as learning and observing other conductors. I also take private voice lessons, and sit for voice exams held by Trinity College and ABRSM. Occasionally, there are conducting workshops and courses that are organised, and I'd attend those as well. Conducting isn't an easy job, as there are so many types of students and choirs that I have to learn to handle and ensure that everyone learns something useful, not just in singing, but also in the student's development as a person. Sometimes that can be challenging. But it's so rewarding when you see your students enjoy singing, grow and improve over time. If you are really keen on going into conducting, I'd say start by taking music lessons (if you do not already play the piano) and start leading in the choir. You cannot be afraid to sing out and speak up in front of people, and of course, you need to set a good example for the choir in terms of singing as well as attitude. Also, listen to more choral music - actually, listen to all types of music - and sharpen your hearing, such that you are able to critically assess a piece of music and point out what you like and don't like about it, and what was good and bad about it. This way, you will be better able to tell a good choir from a bad, as well as what needs to be done to improve the choir. All these things take time to cultivate and nurture. Above all things, you need patience, passion, dedication. Don't lose heart even in the face of failure, because undoubtedly in life, we will definitely all come across some failure. It's great that you're thinking about your future at such a young age. Just make sure that you don't close off any other career options as well, and whatever you do, be happy doing it, and it will cease to be merely a job, but a calling. Good luck for your exams! =) " You don't have to read it all, but basically this has all been very inspiring but Idk, there's just smth in me that decided to let go. I can't believe i just went on friendster just to retrieve this. Yeah, I still remember the password. |
